Kingsport - Harold Powers, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on Saturday May 7, 2016 at Holston Manor. He had been a resident of Kingsport for the past 70 years. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served in the WWII. He was involved in the Battle of Normandy, and also served in the South Pacific who was instrumental in rescuing some of the prisoners of war in Japan. He was proud to have been a spotter with the Artillery Division. He retired from Appalachian Electric Power with over 40 years of service. He was very instrumental in creating the chaplain program for area hospitals. He also was very instrumental in organizing Meals on Wheels in this area. He was an active member of Northeast Church of Christ where he had served as an elder for over 20 years. He preached at various local congregations throughout this area. He was preceded in death by his parents, Radway and Eliza Taylor Powers; sisters, Maxine Bennett, Sonora Simmons and Juanita Powers; brothers, Jerry Powers, Cecil Powers, and Kermit Powers. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Madge Sparks Powers; his daughter, Betty Powers; brother, Joe Powers; along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1pm to 2pm on Tuesday May 10, 2016 at Northeast Church of Christ. A celebration of life service will follow with Tim Hall, Val Roxby, and Jay Cline officiating. Dan Hollyfield will provide a eulogy. A military graveside service will be conducted at Holston View Cemetery following the funeral service with American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 providing the honors. Carter-Trent Funeral Home downtown, Kingsport is serving the Powers family.
