James Hagan Hartgrove
Jan 3, 1939 — Nov 24, 2015
James Hagan "Chigger" Hartgrove, 76, of the Yuma Community, passed away (Tuesday November 24th, 2015) at his home.
Hagan was a man full of life and love who never wasted a day or an opportunity to live it or to share it.
He graduated from Cleveland High School and attended ETSU. Shortly after taking some college classes he joined and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Upon his return from active service he worked as an electrician and troubleshooter at Eastman Chemical where he retired after 33 years of service.
Hagan was active in Yuma Ruritan and Boy Scouts and coached youth basketball. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Cowan's Branch Baptist Church.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, woodworker, gardener and fan of Gate City Football; but he was also a man that put others above himself. Hagan frequently made Sunday dinner for his family and also had the interest of his friends in mind. He was never short on something to get his hands into, never long on words; and never late to wherever he was going.
Hagan was a gift to those who knew him and will certainly be missed in the days ahead.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Lissie Jean Frazier Hartgrove; parents, Alfred and Ida Hartgrove; three brothers, Lorenzo, Glen and Vernon Hartgrove; three sisters, Ruth Hensley, Maggie McGee and Hester Wininger
He is survived by his three children, Anita McClain and husband Rick, Tim Hartgrove and wife Kathy and Michelle McDavid and husband Randy; three grandchildren, Beth Snapp, Tanner MCDavid and Luke Hartgrove; three step grandchildren, Abigail, Sarah and Emma George; brother, Ray Hartgrove and wife Rachelle and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 7pm Friday (November 27th, 2015) at Scott County Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 am Saturday (November 28th, 2015) in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Larry Tolley officiating. Burial will follow in Holston View Cemetery with military graveside rites presented by the American Legion Post 3/265 assisted by the Virginia National Guard. Pallbearers will be Joe Greer, Ben Tittsworth, Clayton McDavid, David Hartgrove, Kenneth Hensley and Scott Hensley. Honorary Pallbearers are Burl Jones and J. Fred Shelton.
