Roy Walter Mcmurray
Mar 23, 1928 — Dec 17, 2016
Roy Walter "R.W." McMurray, Sr., age 88, formerly of Hiltons, VA, finished his race on Saturday, December 17, 2016, after a long battle with alzheimers. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a member of the Masonic lodge. He talked on the CB Radio for years and his handle was "waterdog." His greatest passion was racing. He began racing on the 1950's in Indiana where he won Track Champion. He worked many different jobs throughout the years including truck driver, deputy sheriff and construction; but his love for racing overpowered all the rest. In the 1990's he was a crewmember for Busch and NASCAR series driver, Harry Gant. Also in the late 1990's he owned and drove a super-stock car, but that was not a good idea in his daughters' eyes. He then became owner/crew chief with Bobby Mays and it was back to winning. R.W. loved and enjoyed life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Hazel McMurray; brother, Carl McMurray; son, Buster McMurray; infant son, Charles McMurray; and son-in-law, Tony McMurray.
He is survived by his daughters, Darlene McMurray and fiance', Joe Inscoe; Dianne Coomer and husband, Chuck, and Rhonda Shupe and husband, Roger; grandchildren, Amy, Pam, Mike, Matthew, Anthony, Billie, Hunter, and Chucky; 2 brothers, Caleb and William "Bill"; 3 sisters, Madeline, Betty and Wanda; and good friend, Bobby Mays.
R.W. will be forever loved and missed. He was a beloved father and good friend.
There will be a military graveside service at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 19, 2016, at Joseph McMurray Cemetery behind Glennwood Church in Hiltons, VA. Evangelist Rex McMurray will be officiating and American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 will perform military rites. Following the graveside there will be a Celebration of Life Service in the sanctuary of Glennwood Church. All those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 pm.
Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City is proudly serving the McMurray family.
