Shirley Hill Pennington

Shirley Hill Pennington, 86, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 12, 2026. She was born in Kingsport to the late Barry and Vergie Cross. Shirley was a devoted member Emmanuel Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in her flowers, bird watching, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Thomas Brannon; son, Tim Brannon; brother, Gary Cross.

Survivors include her loving husband of 25 years, Clifford Pennington; daughters, Tammy Bishop and husband Bob, Lorna Hakes and husband Randy, Paula Archer and husband Byron; stepchildren; Patty Hartung and husband Robert, Lisa Gatchel and husband Tommy; grandchildren, Juanita Feix (Chad), Jason Bishop (Charleina), Timothy Brannon Jr (Vanessa), Nathan Brannon (Heather), Amanda Castro (Juan), Liz Hakes, Danielle Enders (Dan), Cassandra Kennedy (Kevin), Christina Jones (Donovan), Ashley Hartung (Brian), Courtney Spence (Evan), Jordan Ellis, Kristen Ellis, Patience Gatchel (Cameron); 31 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Margie Jennings and Velma Hicks; daughter-in-law, Brenda Brannon; along with several nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends from 12pm to 2pm on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Kingsport. A funeral service will follow with Pastor David Powers and Pastor Bob Bishop officiating.

A graveside service will follow at Hermon UMC Cemetery with Kevin Kennedy, Randy Hakes, Donovan Jones, Byron Archer, Jason Bishop, Matthew Gomez, and Dan Enders serving as pallbearers.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home is serving the Pennington family.
