Michael Edward West

Michael Edward West, 80 years of age, born January 5, 1946 in Louisville, Kentucky passed away October 31, 2026 peacefully at his home in Frankfort.

Father, husband, musician, historian, patriot, and educator. He served in the US Army, prominent contributor to Lexington Brass Band, long-time member of Saxton's Cornet Band, founding member of the Capital City Community Band, avid drum corps enthusiast & official judge, and retired as the Co-Director of ASK/SAIL program. Following retirement, he spent his days working for the Frankfort Parks and Recreation Department as the historian and groundskeeper at Fort Hill. He will be remembered for his quick wit, generous spirit and beaming smile. Known simply as "Mr. West" to thousands of members of the community who passed through the doors of Thornhill Education Center and Fort Hill, Michael leaves a legacy ranging from historic music preservation, to lifelong contributions to public services, to making impactful memories for generations of children.

Michael is survived by his wife of 57 years Cathleen (Osinski), his children Scott West (Shannon), Elizabeth May (Brandon), his grandchildren Michael West, Decker West, August West, Maggie West, Silas West, Henry West, Shaun May, Jackson May and Emmett May, and his great-grand child Aidyn West. He was preceded in death by his son Mark West, parents Webb and Elizabeth (Stewart) West and brothers Bobbie and Ronnie West.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 21st at the Kentucky Hug Bourbon Bar (325 St. Clair Street, Frankfort Ky) from 12:00-4:00 pm. An open ‘Mike’ session will be held throughout the occasion as a celebration of music and word for anyone who would like to share.
