Benjamin Huff Averitt

Lexington, KY Benjamin Huff Averitt passed from this world to another on May 28, 2017. He was born January 28, 1929 to Robert and Jessie Averitt at Camp Taylor, KY. He joins his siblings Bob, James, Thomas, Edward, Charles, Jesse, Ann Langley and Wanda Dunn. Ben lived his life to the fullest. His mother instilled the value of education at an early age and he was a lifelong learner. He proudly graduated from Male H.S. in Louisville and is in its Hall of Fame. He taught at Waggener H.S. in Louisville and believed his students were the best and brightest. Throughout the years, he kept in touch with them and was thrilled by their achievements and friendship. UK, U of L, Columbia University and Oxford are some of the colleges he attended earning both a Bachelor and Master Degree. As a young boy, he listed all the places he wanted to see and he made it to all of them but 2. Ben loved sports and was a statistician under Coach Rupp. He followed UK mens basketball, but favored UK womens basketball. He was the Director of International Students at UK. He was a member of the Explorers Club. He raised, trained and showed German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies and Malamutes. Ben had a tremendous sense of humor. He enjoyed all kinds of music. He was a patron of Studio Players at the Carriage House for over 25 years and felt its actors and plays were excellent. Possibly the best time of his life was spent in Kenya as the Director of Education at Kenyatta College. While there, he got to know a family of Cheetahs at the Nairobi Animal Preserve. He also climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. His last years of work were spent at BG Community College where he enjoyed both his co-workers and the students. He is survived by his niece Carol Graham, her husband Richard and their son Daniel. Several nieces and nephews including Bob (Carolyn) Averitt, Melissa Averitt, Jim (Sharon) Averitt, Tom (Jocelyn) Averitt, Debbie (Michael) Dougher, John (Joy) Averitt, Kathy (Mark) Keinath and several others. Funeral Information A Memorial to celebrate Bens life will be from 3-7PM, Friday, June 23, 2017 at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing. A day of celebration will be held at his home on June 24, 2017 from 11-4PM with lunch provided.
