Charles "Chuck" Michael Smith

Charles “Chuck” Michael Smith, a legendary figure in the Kentucky music community and a deeply devoted family man, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, at the age of 62, surrounded by his loving wife and two sons. Born in Cynthiana, Kentucky, on April 25, 1964, to Elbert J. and Elizabeth Faye Smith, Chuck grew up with a deep love for music that would eventually shape the lives of thousands of students across the Commonwealth. After graduating from Harrison County High School in Cynthiana, Kentucky, he went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Kentucky and later earned his master’s degree from Western Kentucky University.

Chuck’s career as a high school band director was defined by unparalleled excellence, passion, and mentorship. He began his teaching journey at Harrison County High School before accepting the director position at Elizabethtown High School, where he served from 1989 to 1995. During his tenure at Elizabethtown, his leadership quickly garnered attention as he guided the program to three Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) State Marching Band Championships. In 1996, Chuck took the helm of the storied Lafayette High School band program in Lexington, Kentucky, serving as the Director of Bands until his retirement in 2021. It was at Lafayette where Chuck’s visionary leadership cemented his legacy as one of the most successful band directors in Kentucky history.

Over his remarkable career, Chuck achieved historic professional accolades by leading his programs to 18 KMEA State Championship Titles (3 at Elizabethtown and 15 at Lafayette) and consistently placing his ensembles among the absolute elite as a 30-time KMEA State Finalist. On the national stage, he guided Lafayette to become a three-time Bands of America (BOA) Regional Champion and a prestigious BOA Grand National Finalist in 2004. Under his direction, students performed for global audiences at the 2002 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. Chuck also cultivated a standard-setting concert band program that regularly achieved Distinguished ratings and was a leader in the state in All-State Honor Band participation, earning the prestigious Sudler Flag award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation in 2014. Beyond the countless trophies, banners, and standing ovations, Chuck’s true legacy lies in the profound impact he had on the arts and the thousands of students he inspired, disciplined, and nurtured over his decades-long career.

In his personal life, Chuck was known for his unwavering love and fierce loyalty to his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Keegan Smith, and his parents, Elbert J. and Elizabeth Faye Smith. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and music in the hearts of his surviving family: his devoted wife, Edwina Goldsmith Smith; his proud sons, Ethan Smith (Liz) and Jackson Smith; his brothers, Tim Smith and David Smith

(Barbara); and his sister, Susan Walters (Dicky), alongside an extensive network of extended family, colleagues, alumni, and friends.

A private graveside service will take place at Lexington cemetery. Plans are being formalized to have a celebration of life/open house for Chuck that will be open to the public. Details to follow and will be announced by the family through all appropriate social media outlets.
