Dr. Donald E. Bodley

Obituary Donald E. Bodley, 81, Ph.D, Th.M, and Emeritus Professor at Eastern Kentucky University, died on August 26, 2010, at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington, KY. He is survived by his partner of 32 years, Donald B. Smith, attorney at law, who lives and practices in Lexington. He is also survived by two sons, Eric Bodley and Elwyn Bodley; two sisters, Patricia Bodley and Irene Butdorf; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel and Deanna. Dr. Bodley was born February 3, 1929 in Milan, Monroe County, Michigan. While in high school, he owned and operated a photography studio. He graduated from Michigan State Normal College in 1953 with degrees in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Communication Arts, and from Eastern Michigan University in 1965 with a degree in Guidance and Counseling. He was ordained a Deacon and Priest in the Episcopal Church, Diocese of Michigan in 1956 and 1957. He received both his Master of Theology Degree in education and a concurrent Master/Doctoral Degree in counseling and psychology from St. Andrew's Collegiate Seminary, London, England in 1966. Foremost a teacher, he devoted his life to the education and advancement of his students. He began his teaching career in 1950 in Branch County, Michigan in a one-room rural school house comprising eight grades. From 1954 to 1966 he served as Director of Leadership Education for the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, Detroit, and as Rector, Christ Episcopal Church, Adrian, Michigan. Dr. Bodley entered private business in 1966 as Vice President for Marketing and National Director of Rentals for Multicon, Corp., Columbus, OH. In 1968 Dr. Bodley founded his own real estate consulting company, Bodley Associates, Inc. in Houston, TX. Focusing on marketing and management of multi-family housing and professional education and training in the field, his client list included Jackie Gleason Enterprises (Inverrary, FL golf course condominiums), Robert Redford Enterprises (Sundance Ski Resort, UT), Osmond Family Enterprises, Joan Crawford Enterprises, Marriott Development Corp., and Carlyle Corp. of New York. Dr. Bodley joined the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University with the rank of full professor in 1975 where he served as founder and chairman of the Real Estate Studies program in the College of Business until his retirement in 1996. He was awarded the Excellence in Teaching and Distinguished Professor Award in 1976-77. Both during and after his teaching career at EKU, Dr. Bodley served as instructor, advisor and education developer to the Kentucky Real Estate Commission and Kentucky Real Estate Appraisers Board. In that capacity he developed testing and education materials for licensing of real estate brokers, sales associates and appraisers. After formal retirement, Dr. Bodley continued to advance the real estate profession. He created the computer delivery system for the Kentucky Real Estate Licensee Tutorial that was used by more than 10,000 licensees, instructors and attorneys annually and served as a subject matter expert for the Kentucky Real Estate Commission's licensing examination. He was a member of the Kentucky Real Estate Educators Association where he served as presenter of numerous educational programs and was instrumental in developing long distance learning programs for real estate agents and appraisers in Kentucky in conjunction with The Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO) and was a member of the Real Estate Educators Association (REEA) for whom he served as webmaster. Funeral Information Following a private interment service at Lexington Cemetery, a public remembrance and memorial gathering for Dr. Bodley will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 5 p.m. at Clark Legacy Center.
