Mabel H. Gorman

Online Obituaries for wilmore Mabel H. Gorman, 90, wife of Rev. Colin T. Gorman, died Sunday, February 1, 2015 at her residence in Wilmore. She was born in Ambler, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late David K. and June White Hellings. She was a member of Roberts Chapel in Nicholasville. Surviving besides her husband are her daughter; Gwenn L. {James A.} Talbott, Jr. Versailles, her son; C. Marshall {Rebecca} Gorman, Freehold, New Jersey and her four grandchildren; Hannah E. Talbott, Versailles, Sarah G. Talbott, Colorado, Jessica J. {Bennett} McKenzie, Arlington, Virginia and Colin P. Gorman, Freehold, New Jersey. Mabel was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor whose many facets will be sorely missed. Her greatest accomplishment was her 71 year marriage to Colin. They were married on October 30, 1943, and were a tremendous team. Mabel supported Colin in all of his endeavors, whether it was building a congregation, building a church, or helping churches raise funds for building in the latter part of their working life. As a mother, she was totally supportive of her children, in their schooling, their college years and their professions. She welcomed their spouses into the family so much, that they often said that they had won the in-law lottery. When the grandchildren came along, she was a doting grandmother who always welcomed them into their homes in Ocean City, NJ, Buckingham, PA and Wilmore, KY. The grandchildren will especially miss her loving phone calls, cards and letters. A highlight of every year was the annual trip to Shawmere in Ontario, Canada. Colin and Mabel spent more than 60 summers enjoying the lake, but more importantly, the family and friends who returned there year after year. Mabel also unofficially adopted all of the pets that came into her life. Her love for animals was well known by her family and friends. As the wife of a minister, she was often in the position to help a member of the church who needed her support, care and friendship. She and Colin served many parishes in Pennsylvania including Prospectville, Cumbola, Huntingdon Valley, and Bethlehem for decades which allowed her to make friends with many members of the congregations, and with those neighbors who were not church members. When Colin went to work with the United Methodist Church Board of Global Ministries, Mabel was an invaluable part of the team, supporting the fundraising at each church. In addition to her family, Mabel loved painting, reading, and writing poetry. Her paintings hang in the homes of her husband, her children and grandchildren. Each year, their Christmas letter included a poem reminding everyone of the true meaning of Christmas. Funeral Information A memorial service will be held in Pennsylvania this spring at the convenience of the family.
