Marvin Benjamin Jones

Obituary Marvin Benjamin Jones, 78, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at Lexington's Veterans Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for a variety of ailments. He is the son of Blanche and Ben Jones, a graduate of Lafayette High, University of Kentucky and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He was an enlisted man in the Marines and a 1st Lt in the Army. Jones was ordained at 2nd Presbyterian Church in Lexington, served as minister and a settlement house director in Indiana and was also a minister in Illinois. He was director of the Community Action program for the war on poverty in 3 Indiana counties, and was voted Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Bloomington, IN. He worked as staff person for a U.S. Senate Subcommittee on International Health, Education and Welfare and was Legislative Director and Campaign Director for various politicians in Chicago and Indiana, Director of Housing Improvements, Inc. in Midtown Manhattan and Director of summer programs for college students in New York City and Washington, D.C. and Director of an Art Gallery in NYC. He was publisher of Town Meeting, a magazine advancing social change, in New York, Boston and Lexington. He recently was a recipient of the Unsung Heroes Award in Lexington because of his contributions to the city. He is survived by his long-time friend, Chris Huestis; his Aunt Lillie Terhune; cousins Bruce Mook, Marlene Bray, Niel Terhune, Betzy Mahler, Carolyn Wheeler; and his friends DF, SF, JTA, TW, DW, MW, GK, DM, DP, LP, BS, CuzJ, LC, EA and many others. Funeral Information A memorial celebration will be held at the UK Arboretum, Sat. July 11, 12:30-2:30 pm and at the Silks Lounge, 125 N. Mill St, 7-8 pm. For information 859- 278-1703.
