Richard Raymond "Dick" Schondel, 87, passed away on August 24, 2025, in Celebration, Florida. Born in Toledo, OH on July 5, 1938, he was a proud veteran and devoted family man. Dick’s life was marked by service, dedication, and enduring love for his country and those closest to him.

Dick served with distinction in the United States Navy for more than three decades, retiring on January 16, 1988. His naval career was a cornerstone of his life—he loved the Navy deeply and committed himself fully to its mission. Much of his service was spent on the flight decks of aircraft carriers, where he played a vital role in maintaining operations during numerous deployments. His assignments took him across the globe, including deployments to Viet Nam and Diego Garcia.

A significant portion of his career was based at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California. There, he contributed not only as a skilled aviation technician but also as a mentor and leader. At the time of his retirement, Dick had attained the rank of Master Chief and was serving as maintenance instructor for the Lockheed S-3A Viking anti-submarine aircraft—a role that reflected both his technical expertise and his commitment to training the next generation of naval personnel.

Beyond his military accomplishments, Dick cherished his family deeply. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly forty years, Harriet Frances Schondel, who passed away in February 2017. Together they built a blended family that brought joy and meaning to their lives.

After retiring Dick and Harriet left San Diego and embarked on a cross-country RV tour pulling their worldly belongings behind them in a fifth-wheel trailer. For more than twenty years they lived in their RV living the adventurous lives of “Snow birds.” They ultimately settled near Orlando, FL and took jobs working at Disneyworld. They continued traveling extensively visiting their children and grandchildren along the way.

He is remembered with love by his children: Pat; Shawn; Tony and Greg. He also held a special place in his heart for his stepdaughters: Nadine; and Debbie. He was preceded in death by stepson Dean.

Dick’s legacy continues through his grandchildren—fourteen in total—and six great-grandchildren who carry forward the values he embodied: strength, perseverance, and loyalty.

A traditional man with an unwavering sense of duty and honor, Dick will be remembered by those who knew him for his steadfast character and lifelong commitment to service. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn him today.
