Joyce Nakayama

Sep 16, 1935 — Oct 4, 2025

Sylvia "Joyce" Fraizer Nigra Nakayama, a woman known for her unfiltered straightforwardness, sparkling humor, and a beautiful heart, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, at 90.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Keith Nakayama, as well as her first husband John Nigra.

Born a beauty on September 16, 1935, in Yakima, Washington, Joyce was the "baby" of nine children to Jay and Gladys Fraizer, growing up alongside siblings Glen, Evelyn, Ella, Ruth, Blaine, Loraine, and Donny.

An adventurous soul, she traveled throughout the world and had a lifelong passion for gardening.

Her vibrant spirit and humor remained with her until the end, when she was surrounded by her steadfast son, James Nigra, her devoted stepchildren, Tim, Amy, and Molly Nakayama, and step-grandchildren Porter, Katsumi, and Ruby.

The family also gratefully acknowledges the compassionate support of her caregivers, Carmen and Amber.

Joyce is also lovingly remembered by her eldest son, Jay Nigra (Luawanna), step-grandson Todd (Krystle), and their children Aubrey and Jake, as well as her first step-granddaughter,  Eleanor Nakayama, whom she shared a very special bond with, often seen laughing and sharing secrets in the garden.

A memorial gathering for Joyce and Keith will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 2:30 pm at the Summerplace Clubhouse, 2020 NE 150th Ave, Portland, Oregon 97230.
