In Memory of Robert James (Bob) McCarthy

Robert James (Bob) McCarthy, a man whose smile and familiar phrases defined his presence, passed away on October 7, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by his family.    Bob was born on September 28, 1947, on Tipperary Hill in Syracuse, New York, to John Francis and Connie McCarthy. He was a 1965 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School and attended Portland State University.  Bob built a life centered on family, humor, and genuine connection. As an avid reader and lover of poetry, Bob’s words and quotes shaped his life and touched the lives of all who knew him. His kindness was a defining characteristic, remembered by everyone who loved him.    Bob was known for effortless charm and quick wit. He had an extraordinary ability to turn strangers into fast friends wherever he went. Throughout his life, he was a dedicated son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, neighbor, and a trusted friend to many.    Bob owned and operated Bob’s Carpet Care for over 20 years. He then dedicated over 24 years to the community as a beloved school bus driver for the Beaverton School District. In addition to getting to know his students and families, Bob truly enjoyed the camaraderie of his good friends, colleagues, and golf buddies.       Bob was the heart of a large family. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary McCarthy Adams, of Syracuse, Utah.  His children survive Bob; Cari, Kevin, and Scott McCarthy, their mother, Ginny McCarthy, and his granddaughter, Addison McCarthy. Also surviving are his brothers; John Francis McCarthy, Skaneateles, NY;  Tom (Linda) McCarthy, Dallas, TX;  Dr. Patrick McCarthy, Bowie, MD; and his sister, Christine (Mike) Kovar, Camillus, NY. Bob is also survived by his dear nephews, and his many nieces, whom he adored.    His family and friends will proudly carry on his appreciation for a good story and a perfectly timed joke, leaving behind a profound legacy of sincere connection and generosity.    Bob’s thoughtfulness extended far beyond his family, often sending a bouquet to someone who who he knew needed to feel appreciated and loved.  In honor of Bob, brighten someone’s day with a kind word or gesture,  he’d love that.    Celebrations of Bob’s life will be held in Spring 2026 in Portland, Oregon and Syracuse, NY. Details regarding the services will be shared by the family soon.
