Leon "Lonny" Oswalt

Leon Miller Oswalt of Milwaukie, Oregon, died at home on August 12th. While his mind and sense of humor were very much him, his body was done.

He was born in Eugene, Oregon, in May of 1946 to Laura and Alfred (Oz)Oswalt. He is predeceased by his parents and older brother, David

In his youth, he went by Lonny. He was an Eagle Scout, Peace Corps volunteer, and jumped fire for the U.S. Forest Service out of Cave Junction.

He was a graduate of the University of Oregon and had a long career in Human Resources, primarily focused on Safety and Risk Management. During his career he was proud to hire women into non-traditional jobs in wood products and help move vests from the trunks of patrol cars onto the officers who may need them.

Leon loved to travel, cook wonderful meals, and read many different newspapers. Often there was a dog or cat, or both, by his side.

He enjoyed sending random gifts to friends based on overheard conversations.

As his mobility declined in recent years, Leon stayed connected by texting family and friends with questions inspired by what he was reading or watching. Thank you to everyone who responded and kept the conversation going.

Leon is survived by his wife, Jeri Oswalt; sisters-in-law Janis Lull (David Oswalt), Chris Goodman, and Margo Jensen; and brother-in-law Lonnie Jensen. His nephew Andrew Goodman; nieces Jessica Feinman, Robin Feinman, Erin Radniecki (Tyler), Laura Kittelson (Rick), and Heather Jenkins (David); and their children brought joy to his life.

Leon made donations to Mainspring Portland (mainspringpdx.org) and the 529 plans of local kids. He would encourage you to do the same.

A casual gathering to remember Leon will be held on October 11th at 1:00. Benita and Damon Stevens are hosting at 5250 Logus Road, Milwaukie, Oregon. Parking at Lewelling Grade School is recommended.
