Philip Meaney
Sep 29, 1951 — May 25, 2026
Philip Michael Meaney, 9/29/1951 – 5/25/2026
Phil was born September 29th, 1951 in Portland, Oregon, to Ruth Kaser and Edward George
Meaney. He was the third of three boys, and attended both All Saints grade school, as well as St.
Thomas More school. Phil graduated from Wilson High School in 1969, having enjoyed a great
athletic career in both football and basketball. He was an all-star halfback on the gridiron, and a
consistent scorer on the basketball court. He played hoops competitively into his 50s – he truly
loved the game. He was also a very familiar sight in the West Hills during his high school years,
riding a mini bike with a refrigerated sidecar, selling ice cream to all the kids in the area.
Phil got his undergrad degree from University of Oregon in 1974, and a Masters in Middle Eastern
Studies from Portland State University in 1978. He traveled extensively for years – particularly to
the Middle East, where he developed an import / export business until he determined to settle
down in Portland and enter the computer industry.
He married Christine Joan Vranizan on May 30, 1987, and moved into their lovely Lake Oswego
home at that time. Chris and Phil then welcomed into the world their beautiful daughter, Shana,
in 1994.
Phil sold personal computers and related products to businesses in the 80s and 90s, working for
Byte Shops Northwest, Inc., which was later acquired by PacTel InfoSystems. Phil was with PacTel,
which became part of ComputerLand / Vanstar for a number of years, and then went out on his
own selling mobile phones and accessories to large corporate customers, until he retired in 2023.
For Phil, music was a huge part of his life. His favorite was “the blues,” and he could be found
over the years at any one of many clubs in Portland, singing up front, along with a local band –
after “selling his way” on to the stage. He had many friends in the music business in Portland, all
of whom he loved to hang out with, whether playing, singing, or just enjoying time together.
Phil was preceded in death by his Mother, Ruth, his Father, Edward, his step Father, Harry
Winkler, and his brothers, Thomas George Meaney and Edward James Meaney. He is survived by
his wife, Christine, their daughter, Shana, and a number of cousins, all of whom cared for him
deeply and miss him sincerely.
Phil Meaney was someone who was truly fun to be around. He was known for his unrelenting,
sunny disposition, and his love of life.
