A 12:00 graveside service for the celebration of the life of Gwendolyn Mixon McMurray, age 95, will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park Serenity Gardens with a visitation one hour prior to the service at Thompson Funeral Home Greenlawn 845 Leesburg Road Columbia SC 29209 on April 25th. The wife of the late Floyd Dallas McMurray, to whom she was married over 60 years and daughter of the late Cornelius Burch and Lucile Daughtry Mixon, was born in Metter, Georgia. The family moved to Winnsboro, SC, during the Great Depression era. She went to her heavenly reward on April 17, 2024. Gwendolyn was a retired administrative assistant with the SC Highway Patrol, SC Law Enforcement-Troop One, and retired on June 30. 1990 after 40 years of service. After retirement, she was employed with the Walker Brothers for 17 years. Gwendolyn was valedictorian of her 1945 class at Greenbriar High School in Fairfield County SC. In 1947, she received a diploma from Columbia Commercial College (South University) for a general business course. A Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Political Science and a minor in women's studies was conferred on her by the University of South Carolina College of Liberal Arts in August 2004 at the age of 76. She was a member of Spring Valley Baptist Church and a member of the BYKOTA life group studies. In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her sister Frances Mixon Lucas of Winnsboro, SC, her brother C. Eldridge Mixon, CPA of Charlotte, NC, and her brother Dr. K. Wayne Mixon of Martinez, GA. She is survived by her daughter Terri Wright Petitt of Columbia, SC, grandson Dallas(Alexandria)Wright of Bluffton, SC and her son Kenneth Floyd(Jodi) McMurray of Cayce, SC, six nephews and 2 nieces, and a number of great nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces. Gwendolyn loved her family very much and was very clear till the end "family is important to me." She loved the Lord God with her whole heart and gave Him credit for sustaining her years and blessing her life. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice or Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223. Thompson Funeral Home Greenlawn is assisting the family.
