John A. Mockry

Mr. John A. Mockry, 89, of Locust Ave, Amsterdam, passed away early Saturday morning November 9, 2013 at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam. Born in Amsterdam, NY on November 5, 1924 a son of the late John and Winifred Ratajczak Mockry. He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and was a 1943 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School. John was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was a Signalman Third Class. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Victory Medal. John along with his Father were the owner and operator's of the former Mockry's Uphosltry in Amsterdam for many years. John enjoyed golfing and fishing. He played at many different golf courses throughout his life and would collect score cards from each one. Mr. Mockry also enjoyed camping especially at Peck's Lake and his visits to Vero Beach Florida and Vermont. He was an avid journal writer and keep a daily journal for years. John also enjoyed Bird Watching as one of his favorite pastimes. He was first married to Joan Stryski Mockry on May 6. 1950. She passed away in 1982. He then married Sandra Palombo Mockry on November 12, 1983. In addition to his beloved wife Sandra he is survived by two sons, John A. Mockry Jr. and his wife Jean of Plattsburg, NY and James E. Mockry and his wife Carol of Centerville, VA. Two step-children, Carole Roy of Amsterdam and Lynn Gieseler and her husband Chris of Amsterdam. Grandchildren, Brian and Katlyn Mockry and step-grandchildren, Calvin Martin, Mason Gieseler and Alexa Gieseler. A Dear brother George Mockry of Colorado. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam. Interment will be in Broadalbin/Mayfield Rural Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the E.L. Wilkinson Facility Activities Fund, 4988 State Hwy 30 N, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
