Kenneth Rodney McCarn, affectionately known as “Papa”, 83, of Hopkins, SC, entered into eternal rest on July 14th, 2025 at home with family.
Papa was born July 9, 1942, in Gastonia, NC to Vertie Ellen Hartness and Burl Onslow McCarn. He had four brothers: Von; Royce; Doug; and Robert, “Bobby.”
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Rachel Lorinda Parker McCarn, his children Jeff (Fabienne), Lisa (Chris), Rodney (Stephanie), Jason (Laura) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Papa retired from the United States Army after serving over 20 years defending his country. He was a Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrolman / Ranger during the Viet Nam War and then trained recruits as a Drill Sergeant. His awards include: Bronze Star w/ Valor, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal and many ribbons and commendations. He was an outstanding soldier, and all of his children followed his footsteps in service.
Papa’s true passion was golf, where he played many tournaments and scored five holes-in-one. He was also an avid runner and an award-winning woodcarver. He was loved by all and will be missed immensely.
Services will begin on July 24, 2025, at 11 a.m., Thompson’s Funeral Home: 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Burial will follow at 1 p.m., Fort Jackson National Cemetery: 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229.
