Kim Han, age 95, of Oakland, California, passed away peacefully on July 6th, 2025 in Castro Valley. She was surrounded by her beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her seven children: Remona, Kimtha, Nary, Sophany, Somaly, Sovandy, and Paula; 27 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bloung Ngan and Noun Ngao, her siblings Heng Ngan and Khim Ngan, her husband Koy Hang, and great-granddaughter Emma Sorensen.
Born on February 4, 1930, in Kompong Cham, Cambodia, Kim was the youngest of three children. After her parents separated, she and her siblings were raised by their paternal grandparents in Kompong Cham Province. As a young girl, she enjoyed working alongside her grandmother on the family’s fruit plantation, growing bananas, oranges, and mangoes. She later worked as a seamstress in a tailor shop.
At age 16, Kim married Koy Hang, and together they built a loving home and family in Phnom Penh. Though their marriage was arranged, Kim often reflected on the deep love and respect they shared. Their life changed drastically when the Khmer Rouge regime took control of Cambodia in 1975. During the years of war and devastation (1975–1979), Kim and her family were separated and placed into internment camps. Despite brutal conditions—illness, abuse, and starvation—she remained a fierce protector. After losing her husband to starvation in August of 1977, Kim risked her own safety to feed and care for her youngest children--even by swimming across rivers in the late hours of the night to bring them food narrowly avoiding being seen by soldiers.
In 1979, after the fall of the Khmer Rouge, Kim and her children fled Cambodia and spent two years in Thai refugee camps. Ever resourceful, she opened a small food business in the first camp to support her family. The second camp, sponsored by the Red Cross, eventually led them to be resettled in the United States. In 1982, the family arrived in Oklahoma City through the sponsorship of the Catholic Church, and a year later made their permanent home in Oakland, California. Kim lived independently until the age of 93.
Kim was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in the Oakland 10th Cambodian Branch for 40 years. Known lovingly as “Grandma Hang” by church members, she had a deep testimony of the gospel and found joy in temple service, community, and faith.
Though she traveled within the United States (including Hawaii), she also visited Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, and back to Cambodia, it was life’s simple joys that meant the most to Kim—watching her grandchildren, cooking her signature red coconut curry, green sweet sticky rice, and coconut Jello for special occasions, and taking spontaneous rides to In-N-Out for a burger with extra veggies and a Coke with no ice. She especially loved Disneyland, never passing up a chance to ride a rollercoaster with her grandkids.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, July 19th, from 9:00–10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Oakland Interstake Center at Temple Hill, 4770 Lincoln Ave. Oakland, CA 94602. Interment will take place following the service at Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Rd. Lafayette, CA 94549. Friends are warmly invited to attend.
