Suzanne Rekate Post of Little Silver, NJ and Hilton Head, SC, passed away peacefully in her home in Harbour Town on Monday, July 21. Born on June 16, 1944, the only child of Dr. Albert Rekate and Elizabeth (Foster) Rekate of Buffalo, NY, she was 81.
Suzy spent her early years in the rural community of Elma, New York, beginning her education in a one room schoolhouse and progressing to Swarthmore College where she graduated in 1965. While at Swarthmore, she was introduced to her husband of 60 years, Bill Post. Suzy and Bill began the first years of their marriage in Norristown, PA but spent the majority of their lives together in Monmouth County, New Jersey, where they resided for over four decades in Middletown and Little Silver before retiring to Hilton Head in 2015.
Suzy had a very active life spreading goodwill to all that knew her. A champion to many causes in her community, she served as a full-time volunteer to many organizations before beginning her career with the Rumson Country Day School in 1985. At RCDS, her number one love, she spent 46 years under many different hats making the school welcome to all. Her tenure began as a parent and expanded to serving on the Parent Council and the Board of Trustees. After her children graduated, she joined the school’s administration, working in development and public relations before serving for many years as the school’s first Director of Admissions, where she was an integral part of the school leadership and was beloved by the school community. In 2012, she transitioned to a part time role in the Alumni Office, and upon retirement in 2015 she returned to the Board of Directors, where she served until 2020. During her time at RCDS, she helped increase the outreach of the school with the establishment of the Horizons program utilizing the school’s facilities over the summer months, and started a limited scholarship program to make the school more accessible to the greater community.
Her extensive public service included serving on several boards, most significantly with the Monmouth County Historical Association, where her contributions included 30 years on the Board and as president for several years. She also gave her time to the boards of the Women’s Exchange, the Monmouth County Organization for Social Service (MCOSS), and the Twin Lights Historical Society.
Despite her extensive efforts outside the home, Suzy still had time to prioritize her first love, her family. Kind and incredibly generous, she set high standards and led her family by example, instilling an appreciation for hard work, hospitality, adventure, and beauty.
Suzy loved to travel, infused in her spirit at an early age when she spent time abroad with her parents when her father was stationed overseas after the war. She continued the adventures with multigenerational family trips to new places, visits to see her son and his family when they were stationed abroad through the years, and boutique cruises with Bill.
An ambitious “do it yourself-er”, you would often find Suzy on top of a ladder single-handedly re-painting the house, sewing new draperies, or cooking up an epic feast to host friends and family.
She loved beautiful spaces and was endlessly planning renovations and new improvements to her home, often consulting with her architect daughter through the years.
Suzy is survived by her loving husband Bill; son Rick (Jennifer) of McLean, VA; daughter Becky Lynch (Andy) of Savannah, GA; and four granddaughters Eleanor Post, Margaret Post, Mattie Lynch and Phoebe Lynch. Her strong spirit and welcoming nature will be greatly missed by all those who had the opportunity to know her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rumson Country Day School, or the Monmouth County Historical Association.
