James J. Lawless, affectionately known as Jim, aged 93 of Lafayette, passed away on August 13, 2025. He was born on August 21, 1931 in Syracuse, the youngest of nine children to parents Leo and Sarah.

Jim was a gifted athlete and star in four sports at Onondaga Valley Academy, among his accolades was being chosen All-City Running Back. Upon graduation in 1951 he married his high school sweetheart and drum majorette, Joyce Six. Jim received an offer to try out for the Brooklyn Dodgers, which he ultimately declined to prioritize his wife and soon-to-grow family. Jim and Joyce owned Marian Margaret restaurant and bakery on South Salina Street for many years. Before retirement, they pioneered the food truck industry serving numerous construction sites in Syracuse, including the original Route 81 and the Carrier Dome. Jim also coached youth football, basketball and baseball for The Valley Broncos VJAA (Valley Journey Athletic Association) teams for several years.

Jim was a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and their six children - Richard, Dorothy (Jeff Booher), Daniel (Jean Dominic), William (Lori Carlson), Kenneth and Susan.

Jim is predeceased by his eight siblings and son-in-law Tom Dominic.

Jim was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame sports. Go Irish!

There will be no public memorial services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Assumption Food Pantry or The Syracuse Rescue Mission in honor of Jim Lawless.
