Friends and family, I'm writing this post with a heavy heart. James R. Stewart, age 44, passed away on July 31, 2025. James was quiet, steadfast, and loyal.  Those who got to know him enjoyed his dry wit and his allegiance.  James worked hard to support and love his family.  He encouraged us all to rock climb, travel and get outside our comfort zones.  He also loved being one of the favorite uncles to his four nephews.  In addition, James was a great lover of animals.  He was always willing to watch anyone's dog, and he cared for them in a way that the dogs loved.  Growing up, our dog Toby had a special connection to James.  Toby would even tolerate sleeping in a hammock all night with James.  Approximately ten years ago, James took in Ellie and cared for her lovingly until the end of her days.  His love for dogs was evident.

From the moment I knew James, I was in awe of him.  He was braver and stronger than I was. (He tried out and made multiple theater productions, he would explore the nightlife of foreign countries by himself or with friends, and he wasn't afraid to try new foods).  Due to his love of adventure, he got to travel and see much of the world.  With his Eagle Scout troop, he went sailing in the Florida Keys, canoeing in the Canadian Boundary waters, and exploring the Appalachian Trail.  During his time at Odell Brewery, he traveled to Scotland and Germany to learn about the techniques of other brewmasters.  With his friends, he visited Mexico, and with his family, he explored the United States, parts of Canada, Australia, and Europe.

He was naturally talented and easily became a valued asset to whatever team he was on -volleyball, skiing or snowboarding, diving, tennis, singing, organizing anything/everything, or showing up as a valued employee.  He also had a love for the visual arts (i.e., television, movie productions, and the theater).  I think he has seen everything that has ever been produced and could tell you what he liked about it and what he didn't.

Over time, James' health started to deteriorate, and although his death by natural cause was unexpected (James died from medical complications), he is free of pain and discomfort. He joins his cousins and grandparents’ in heaven.  James is survived by his parents (David and Mary Stewart) and siblings (Jenifer Bergdolt, Andrew Stewart).

Nothing can prepare you for the death of a loved one, when their body ceases to exist in this world. Joyful or funny memories help us lessen the pain.

We are asking those close to us and to James to post their favorite photos and share their favorite memories of James, on the website created through Vessey Funeral Home. We will update friends and family as we prepare for his celebration of life ceremony. In lieu of flowers or other items, we ask that you donate to your local animal rescue in James's memory.
