Don was born in Great Falls Montana 9/3/1947 to Alice Kay Newman Smith and Cyrus Donald Smith Jr. He passed away peacefully at age 77 on 8/16/ 2025 in Puyallup, WA. 

 

Don was a loving husband and family man with a heart of gold. He loved reading, music, college football, gourmet food, politics, genealogy, history, and just hanging out with his wife and little dog Goldie. He traveled to over 80 different counties. 

 

Don grew up in Boise ID. His family moved to Samamish WA when Don was a Junior at Bora HS, where he  graduated from Samamish HS. He served two years in the Army in Germany after which he attended college at California State University. He passed the California CPA test on the first try! He then got his master’s degree in finance from Washington State University. 

 

Don started an accounting business around 1972, Smith Carr and Mc Lane in Tacoma, WA. When he retired, he continued working part time as a Forensic Account. Don was a member and treasurer of the of the Tacoma Urban League. He also enjoyed men’s meetings at the Tacoma Union Club. 

 

Don is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Joan Iatesta Smith, and her 2 children Bianca Filiss and Gennaro Nappo and 2 grandchildren Ava and Kate Filiss.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother Kelso Walton Smith. He is also survived by his sister Karen Lee (Smith).

 

A celebration of life and luncheon will be held at:  The Island Lodge in Lake Tapps WA, on 9/20/2025 at 11:30 am for family and close friends.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations to scholarships for Veteran students at Washington State University will be appreciated.
