Obituary - James Edward Griffin, Jr.
October 15, 1953 – August 24, 2025
James Edward Griffin, Jr., affectionately known to many as “Button” or “Griff,” peacefully entered eternal rest on August 24, 2025. Born on October 15, 1953, in LaMarque, Texas, James was the beloved son of the late James (Buster) Edward Griffin, Sr. and Lee Ruth (LaRue) Henry Griffin. Raised in West Texas City, James accepted Christ at an early age under the stewardship of Galilee United Methodist Church. His strong foundation in faith would become the cornerstone of a life filled with service, humility, and unwavering devotion to God and others.
A proud graduate of LaMarque High School, Class of 1972, James was not only a standout football player but also a natural leader among his peers. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. His distinguished military career spanned nearly two decades, culminating in his retirement in July 1992. James served with honor, integrity, and a deep commitment to protecting the freedoms we all hold dear.
Following his military service, James settled in Fairfax, Virginia, where his faith continued to shine through his tireless involvement at Antioch Baptist Church – Fairfax. A devoted member for over 30 years, he served faithfully in multiple ministries including the Usher Board, Men’s Choir, Security Ministry, Sunday School, and the Prison Ministry. James had a particular passion for mentoring and uplifting youth, always striving to be a godly example in both word and deed. His heart for service and his love for others were evident in every corner of his life.
James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Oretha (Ressie) Quarles-Griffin, who passed away in November 2023. He is survived by his cherished daughters, Monique Quarles-Moody and Charee Lile, son-in-law Daryl Moody, and five grandsons: Micah Quarles, Donovan Moody, Trevor Moody, Brandon Moody, and Koby Moody. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Luca Harmon, Harlow Moody, and Braylon Moody, as well as his sisters, Deberal Griffin Haynes and Velma Inez Griffin, and brother James Butler (Olivia). James is also remembered fondly by a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and lifelong friends.
To know James was to know kindness, faithfulness, and strength rooted in love. Though his earthly journey has ended, his legacy of faith, service, and compassion lives on in all who had the blessing of knowing him. He has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.
"Well done, good and faithful servant…" – Matthew 25:21
