Born November 13, 1938, the daughter of Samuel Selby and Jane McCoy Selby, Janice grew up with her family in Fort Johnson, NY. She attended Fort Johnson elementary, where in the second grade she met her lifelong best friend Elaine Marshall Rogers. Janice graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam, NY in June of 1956 and in 1959 graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY.

On October 31, 1959 Janice married the Rev. Robert William Smith at the Grace Methodist Church in Fort Johnson. Together with her husband Bob they served various Methodist churches from 1959 to 1964. From her early days as a student nurse to her later years as a great grandmother, Janice generously shared her gift as a passionate caregiver, touching the lives of so many on her journey.

Janice loved reading, shopping and spending time with her family. She prioritized attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sports and activities in school and college. She truly loved all animals, especially dogs. Janice also loved to travel, especially to Ogunquit, Maine to relax by the ocean, walk the Marginal Way and visit the Nubble Lighthouse.
