Hildegard "Hildy" Nelly Jorgensen
July 15th, 1936 - September 16th, 2025
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we wake or sleep we might live with him. (1 Thes. 5:9-10)
Hildegard "Hildy" Nelly Jorgensen, the heart of her family and a lifelong champion of compassion, passed away on September 16, 2025, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 89. Born on July 15, 1936, in Zurich, Switzerland, Hildy’s journey through life was marked by her unwavering faith, generous spirit, and dedication to service. With her unique blend of charm and intellect, she traveled from the serene banks of Lake Zurich to the bustling streets of New York City, where she began building the legacy that defined her life.
Hildy was predeceased by her loving husband, Ernest B. Jorgensen, but leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness through her two children, Kirsten Kirkman (and her husband, Christopher) and Christopher Jorgensen (and his wife, Isis), as well as her cherished grandchildren: Victoria, Diana, Hunter, Sarah, Liam, Gia, Olivia, and Sophia. She was a beloved aunt, cousin, and friend to many, leaving an indelible mark on each heart she touched.
After completing business school at Fribourg College in Switzerland, Hildy continued her education at a nursing school in Zurich. Her adventurous spirit led her to the United States for a temporary nursing position in New York City, where destiny intervened when she met her future husband through her work. Together, they built a life in Maryland, where Hildy became a dedicated nurse in the field of dermatology research. Her groundbreaking studies on psoriasis, systemic acne, and male pattern baldness contributed significantly to medical science, and her proudest moments came as she uncovered beneficial effects of the medications she studied alongside esteemed doctors.
Beyond her professional achievements, Hildy lived as a true humanitarian. She came from a musically gifted family and found joy in singing in the church choir each Sunday. Known for her kindness, generosity, and empathy, she poured herself into serving others—whether knitting blankets for her grandchildren and the children of St. Ann’s Center, or supporting her fellow parishioners at St. Matthias Catholic Church. She embodied selflessness in all she did.
Retirement did not slow Hildy down; it gave her new opportunities to give. Through St. Matthias, Hildy organized and distributed food at the church food pantry, provided rides to those who couldn’t travel, and counted the weekly church collections. Her passion for service especially shone through the Ladies of Charity, where she was a constant, welcoming presence. Beyond the parish, she also fostered camaraderie and encouragement through her involvement in T.O.P.S. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), where laughter and support were always part of the journey.
In 2015, Hildy joined the spiritual community of the Two Hearts of the Alliance of the Holy Family International (AHFI), deepening her faith and forming lasting friendships. Whether answering a small request or rising to a larger need, she always gave of herself fully, offering wisdom, compassion, and care.
Family, friends, and community members are invited to celebrate Hildy’s remarkable life. A visitation will be held on October 12, 2025, from 2 PM to 6 PM with shared remembrances at 4 PM at Advent Funeral Home, located at 9013 Annapolis Road, Lanham, MD 20706. A Funeral Mass will take place on October 13 at 10 AM at St. Matthias the Apostle Catholic Church, 9475 Annapolis Road, Lanham, MD 20706.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hildy’s memory to EWTN, the St. Matthias Ladies of Charity Food Pantry, AHFI (Alliance of the Holy Family International) , or a cancer research charity of your choice.
Hildy’s life, rich in compassion, joy, and service, was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her legacy will continue to encourage others to love, serve, and live fully, just as she did. Though she has left this earth, her spirit will forever shine in the hearts of her family and all those she touched.
