George L. Elrod and Shirley L. Elrod
George L. Elrod, 98, and Shirley L. Elrod, 96, of Davenport, FL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by their loving family—George on September 29, 2025, and Shirley on November 16, 2024.
George was born on February 19, 1927, in Manchester, TN, to Emmett W. and Alice (Walton) Elrod. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving two years and attaining the rank of Sergeant. Following his service, George worked as a business manager for the Carpenters Union for 35 years before retiring in 1991. He was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Niles, MI.
Shirley was born on March 7, 1928, in Niles, MI, to Lloyd and Nellie (Lindborg) Blank. She was a dedicated homemaker, wife, and mother, and like her husband, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Niles, MI. Shirley and George moved to Florida in 1992 from Niles, MI, to enjoy their retirement together.
George enjoyed golfing, building houses, and spending time with his family. He loved Florida, was known for his kindness and generosity, and was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. Shirley enjoyed sewing, crocheting, golfing, baking, and caring for her grandchildren. She was known for her sweet, loving nature—yet also for being gently firm when needed. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family, and they will be remembered for the warmth and goodness they shared with all who knew them.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Alice; his beloved wife, Shirley; his son, Mark Elrod; and eight siblings. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Nellie; her son, Mark; and five siblings.
They are survived by their daughter, Debra (Allen) Clavet of Winter Haven, FL; brother and brother-in-law, Floyd Elrod of Michigan and William (Susan) Blank; seven grandchildren—Nicholas, Edward, Megan, Jordin, Joshua, Britney, and Catina—and ten great-grandchildren.
No services are scheduled at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in their memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
