Michelle Fortin Ambler, 75, died peacefully at home on October 12 after a courageous three year battle with cancer.

Born March 26, 1950, in Denver, Michelle was adopted as an infant by Mary C. Fortin, RN, and Virgil R. Fortin, MD, both of whom worked at Mercy Hospital. As the story goes, the nuns there told the Fortins they had a baby with “Fortin eyes” waiting for them—even though her eyes weren’t the same color.

Michelle graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and attended Regis University. A lifelong learner, she developed a passion for natural healing and became a Master Herbalist and Iridologist in her 40’s and continued practicing until her death.

She married Kirby Ambler, Jr. in 1985, and the couple would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on November 8. They divided their time between Denver and Mesquite, Nevada, where they enjoyed sunshine, good friends, and many happy rounds of golf.

Michelle devoted countless hours volunteering at animal shelters in both Denver and Mesquite. Her compassion and generosity touched the lives of many, and her beloved rescue dog, Charlie, was her constant companion and source of joy.

Michelle was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Virgil Fortin; her brothers, Richard and Greg (Frog) Fortin; her sisters, Joan Haan and Ida Mae Landrum; and her son, John Atencio, whom she lost ten years ago. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Atencio; her husband, Kirby Ambler, Jr.; her dog, Charlie; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Michelle will be remembered for her warmth, humor, compassion, and strength. Her generous heart, joyful spirit, and deep Catholic faith sustained her throughout life and comforted her in her final days.
