Carol J. (Stewart) Ackerman grew up in West Hempstead, NY. She moved to the area to attend Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy, NY, and continued on to receive Master’s Degree in nursing. Carol met her husband Jim through local Christian young adult groups. They married in 1967. Carol spent her career as a nurse and teacher in the capital region. She and Jim raised a daughter, Holly, and spent many years as faithful companions. In more recent years, after his death, she and her daughter Holly shared the adventures of life together.
Carol always had her eyes towards the future. She focused on what could be done, and stuck to it until her "project" was complete. In more recent years, she and her daughter did Big Things, like caring for Jim in hospice care at home, and little things, like tending her garden. Carol was a force to be reckoned with, but most often with a smile on her face. She enjoyed learning and also teaching, and shared these gifts throughout her life. Even in her last days, there was a student of hers who recognized her name and came to her bedside to visit.
She loved to travel. Even as a young woman she spent months in India, and in the US southern states, serving as a nurse in the more needy areas of these regions. She then literally traveled around the world, always expressing her love and care for cultures not her own. Carol enjoyed many a Sunday Brunch at "The Sitar" Indian buffet and more recently at "Shining Rainbow" for Dim Sum in downtown Albany. Carol’s loved ones knew her as "all go" or "all stop”, and a woman who defied the norm. She attained an advanced degree when that was rare for the time and was the main driver in her family until all but recently. Growing up, her mother worried that she was "sickly" and felt the need to tell Carol to "stop running" while playing. She spent a lifetime doing things her way instead! Rest now, true and Faithful servant; time to stop running.
All are invited to attend a memorial service that will be held on October 25, 2025 at 3 p.m. at Delmar Reformed Church, 386 Delaware Ave, Delmar, NY. Online condolences and for full obituary, please visit brbsfuneral.com
