Obituary for Michael John Medley, DDS

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael John Medley, DDS, a cherished husband, father, and esteemed member of the community, who passed away on October 4, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on March 25, 1947, Michael dedicated his life to his family, his patients, and his passions.

Michael's journey began at Issaquah High School, where he graduated in 1965, setting the stage for a remarkable academic career. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1969, followed by his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1974 and his Oral and Maxillofacial residency at the University of Florida in 1977. It was during his time at dental school that he met the love of his life, Carol Lynn Harris. They were united in marriage on February 1, 1975, at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, and together they celebrated 50 years of marriage, encompassing a beautiful partnership filled with mutual respect and support.

Michael is survived by his wife Carol Lynn (Harris) Medley. He was a devoted father to his two sons, Patrick Michael and Jonathan William Medley, who continue to honor his legacy. He was also a proud grandfather to William Arthur Medley and Frederick Ryan Medley, who brought immense joy to his life. Mike was known for his quick wit and brilliant mind. He took immense joy in supporting his sons’ athletic pursuits, often found on the sidelines cheering at soccer, football, basketball, and baseball games during their childhood through their to college years. His commitment extended beyond the family as he showcased the same dedication in his oral surgery practice, responding to emergencies with unwavering resolve, irrespective of the hour or day.

As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon from 1977 until his retirement in 2014, Michael dedicated his career to improving the lives of many. His time in the field was marked by a commitment to excellence and patient care, earning him the respect of his peers and gratitude from those he treated.

Mike was not only a skilled professional but a talented athlete as well. He achieved remarkable accolades as a water skier, proudly earning titles as the Washington State and Canadian National Water Ski Champion, along with qualifying for the US National championship. His adventurous spirit was also reflected in his love for snow skiing, where he contributed as a member of the Stevens Pass Ski Patrol, and his passion for golf, fly fishing, and sailing, having crewed in numerous sailboat races, including the prestigious Swiftsure. His pride was prominently displayed in his beloved Sealegs Amphibious Boat, which epitomized his love for boating and the exhilarating experiences on the water.

In addition to his numerous accomplishments, Mike was a voracious reader and a devoted family man who cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories that they will always hold dear.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held at a later date, details of which will be provided to those who wish to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial donations be made to The American Heart Association, The American Diabetes Association, or the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, in honor of Michael's commitment to helping others.

He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, diligence, and unmatched enthusiasm for life. Mike's presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
