Allen enjoyed a fulfilling career. He always contended that he never had a job he didn’t like and he never pursued a job he didn’t get. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years, working as a jet engine mechanic at Williams AFB and a jet fighter crew chief at Luke AFB. He was a member of the USAF Rifle Team at Lackland AFB. In 1979, Allen relocated to Denver, Colorado, where he continued his work in support of national space programs. He retired in 2000 after 33 years of U.S. government service.
In retirement, Allen had a life full of hobbies and volunteer work. He spent much time fly fishing, golfing, and shooting sporting clay targets. He loved wine collecting and astronomy. He was an amateur radio operator. Photography was a hobby that Allen enjoyed all his life.
His volunteer work included work with USA Shooting at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He was a judge at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and he served as Vice President of USA Shooting for 8 years from 2004 to 2012. In 2008, he was elected to the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Rifle Committee.
Allen was an only child and was predeceased by his parents Byron and Irma Harry. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Sandra Berkley; his five children James Harry, David Harry, Lynda Harry White and son-in-law Timothy White, Sheri Landon, Raymond Harry and daughter-in-law Kim Harry; his grandchildren Melissa, Skyler, Krista, Emma, Robyn, Danyelle, Dylan, Joshua, Kaitlin, Brandon (deceased), Jackie, and Nicole as well as many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; his sister-in law Patricia Amente and brother-in-law John Amente; and his nephews Giancarlo, Marcello, and Giorgio.
