Hugh "Who" Matthew Daugherty, 72, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend was welcomed into the arms of his Savior while surrounded by his family in his home on Sunday, November 9, 2025. Born in Richwood, WV on August 4, 1953 to Elmer and Glada Daugherty. He was also blessed by the love and Godly influence of his maternal Grandparents.

Shortly after high school, he married his sweetheart. Their marriage was a testament to their enduring love and commitment and the grace and goodness of God. Over the years to come, his dedication to his work and the bond he shared with his co-workers were hallmarks of his 38 years at Georgia Pacific before retirement followed by the years spent at Hobgood Electric. The friendships he made over those years formed many strong bonds that continued to be lifelong connections.

Following his retirement, he was able to pursue a lifelong dream of joining the fire department. He was a proud member of Pomaria Fire and Rescue until his last breath and absolutely loved his time of service there and cherished the friends and connections that he made while serving his community.

His greatest joy in life was being "Baba" to his five grandchildren. The lessons he taught, the memories he made and the love he gave will continue to shape each of them for the rest of their lives.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years: Katherine Daugherty. Daughter: Jennifer (Nathaniel) Birochak. Grandchildren: Ezekiel, Isabelle, Silas, Bianca and Lucy Birochak, all of Pomaria, SC. Sister: Edith (Dennis) O'Dell and Nephew Timothy O'Dell of Leivasy, WV. Cousins: Wayne (Denise) Long, Steve (Mary Claire) Long and Vandi (David) Stewart.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife's parents.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 3:00 at First Baptist Church of Newberry, 1020 Boundary St, Newberry, SC 29108. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pomaria Fire Department, 241 Holloway Street, Pomaria, SC 29126.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness ... " 2 Timothy 4:7-8a
