Glenn Stanley Cherry, a man of grit, charm, and unapologetic authenticity, passed away on November 12, 2025. He departed on his own terms as the evening put on a show: a spectacular sunset and a rare aurora gracing the Northern California sky. Born to Mary and Elmer Cherry of Templeton, California, on October 7, 1942, Glenn lived a life rich with adventure and hard work.
Glenn and Eve
Glenn shared more than sixty years of marriage with his wife, Eve Cooke Cherry. Their journey together began in England during his Air Force service. His courtship was straightforward: walking her home from dances and returning with American books whose pages kept their conversation going. They were married in Essex, England, honeymooned in Scotland, and set the foundation for a lifelong partnership. After returning to the United States, their life unfolded across the American West—California, Oregon, and Montana—and included 20 homes together. They built a life shaped by deep love, commitment, and a wealth of shared experiences, both wonderful and challenging.
From Dairy Barn to Ranch Boss
Glenn was a man of contrasts—fiercely independent, willful, strong, sentimental, and deeply devoted to his family. Though he rarely expressed his softer feelings in words, he valued his family above all else and took immense pride in imagining the generations that would carry on his name. He taught his children to stand their ground, value a hard day’s work, and appreciate the joys of ranch life.
Glenn attended Fresno State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but his heart was always destined for ranching. Raised working hard on the dairy and hayfields of the Cherry family ranch, his expertise and dedication led him to begin his ranching career at the J.G. Boswell Feedlot and Boston/Keystone, and later managing the ZX, B Bar H, and Rafter L ranches, before returning to the Cherry Ranch to assist his parents in their final years. He could fix anything mechanical and was a country man through and through.
Athlete, Pilot, Outdoorsman
Glenn’s passions were as rugged and varied as the landscapes he managed. He was an athlete, an “undefeated” boxer, a pilot, and a consummate outdoorsman. He loved the natural world, the freedom of the sky, the view from a saddle, the sea air while fishing from the Goose, the thrill of a snowmobile and doing brodies, and the reward of chasing down a poacher.
His best memories came from a life lived outside - feeding and working cows, packing into the mountains on horseback, hunting, and fishing both ocean and stream. His preferred country included Pozo and Pine Mountain, the Sierra Nevada, “the Point” on the Central Coast, the Ochoco Mountains, and Montana’s Anaconda–Pintler Wilderness. He had an innate connection with wildlife—a deep respect for nature and a unique ability to tame nearly any creature. From baby deer, raccoons, squirrels, hawks, and a three-legged fox to magpies and baby owls—and while maybe not tame, he was known to capture and release many others, like skunks, coyotes, and even a yearling moose. In his later years, Glenn’s focus shifted from hunting to observing, and he took immense joy in watching deer, elk, wild pigs, turkeys, and horses roam freely on his land. Through it all, his most treasured companions were his dogs: Mooch, Happy, Chopper, Stub, Frosty, Snapper, Crank, Doodle, Boomer, Sam, Rosco, Buzz, Miller, Stoney, Rumpy, Ringo, Augie, and Posie.
Pozo—Neighbors, Campfires, and Homemade Bread
Glenn’s greatest pleasure was found at his Pozo home, where he was happiest up his canyon. There he spent many hardworking hours developing his lake and homestead for the enjoyment of future generations. He found deep joy and purpose in life’s simple pleasures and self-sufficiency. He valued the company of a good neighbor, meaningful conversation, vegetables from his garden, the satisfaction of canning, a perfectly stacked wood pile, campfires, sleeping under the stars, a good mid-day nap, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, and making homemade bread. He also embraced a lifetime of smokes, whiskey, and wine, accepting these parts of himself without apology. Apologies were rare in his vocabulary; resolve never was.
Children, Grandchildren, and Great-Grandchildren
Glenn’s legacy continues through his family. He is survived by his children: Shane Cherry and his wife, Angela (sons Cole and Brody); Glenn “Chip” Cherry and his wife, Michelle (son Bo (Ally); daughters Cora Cherry (Diego) and Minna Cherry (Ryan); and Kelly Cherry Mora and her husband, Steve (daughters Audrey Seech (Austin) and Grace Hornbeak (Chris). He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Archer and Avery Cherry, and Aida and Alice Seech; as well as his siblings, Jeff Cherry, Kittie Prock, and Calvin Cherry. His Tribe—Lesley, Hayley, Emerson, Heath, Carolina, Mikayla, and Jared—are honored to have shared in his life.
Resting Lakeside Where Wildflowers Bloom
For a man who lived by the rhythms of the land and sky, the aurora was a fitting tribute. It kindled like a cowboy’s fire in the high country and etched a pilot’s last flight across the horizon. That celestial display wasn’t an ending, but a final trail marker—the persistent light of a man whose will didn’t waver, who chose his path and moment to leave.
In a characteristic act of planning, Glenn chose his own resting place at his Pozo home. Beneath a cottonwood on the bank of his lake, he set his own natural headstone, where his ashes will one day be joined and spread with Eve’s. At his request, the site will be planted with native California poppies, shooting stars, and lupine. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said he hoped his passing would be an occasion for a party. Glenn Stanley Cherry was never defeated; he lived fully, loved deeply, and on his last night, even the stars tipped their hats.
A Celebration of Life
Glenn’s party will be held November 29th in Pozo. All those who loved, respected, and appreciated him are invited to join his family in a day of happy remembrance. Further details will be shared in the coming days.
