The Island Funeral Home & Crematory
Joan Tilbury Cherrington
October 4th, 1929 - November 15th, 2025
Joan Tilbury Cherrington, 96, passed away peacefully after a long and faith-filled life. Born on October 4, 1929, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Joan most recently made her home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where she spent many cherished years surrounded by family, friends, and the natural beauty she so loved.
Guided by a deep and unwavering faith, Joan found her strength and purpose in her trust in God and her devotion to her family. She drew special comfort from 2 Corinthians 4:16, which speaks of inner renewal and the promise of heavenly joy—truths she lived out each day with grace and quiet confidence. Her service to her church and her active involvement in P.E.O. were enduring sources of fulfillment. She was known for her gentle spirit, her generosity, and her gift for uplifting those around her.
Joan delighted in the simple and profound beauty of the world: sunsets that painted the sky, blooming flowers, and all things that revealed God’s handiwork. She carried that same appreciation for grace and beauty into every corner of her life.
Her legacy of faith, love, and quiet strength will continue to shine through the family she so deeply cherished.
Joan is survived by her children, Chris Cherrington, Grant Cherrington (Becky), and Todd Cherrington; her beloved grandchildren Katie Cherrington, Britni Fancsali (Steve), and Nick Austin; her cherished great-grandson, Miles Fancsali; and many dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 77 years, Leon Cherrington; her daughter, Jodie Austin; and her grandson, Reed Austin.
If you wish to donate in Joan’s memory, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island (memo: Bahati Scholarship), which supports high school education for disadvantaged students in Nairobi, Kenya.
Donations may also be made to SOAR (Special Olympics and Recreation of the Lowcountry), 800 Main Street, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. SOAR serves Special Olympics Area 8 in South Carolina, and Joan’s grandson, Nick, proudly participates in their pickleball program.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Monday, December 8 at 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island.
