Mary Kay Bagnal
September 13th, 1950 - November 14th, 2025
In Loving Memory
Mary Katherine Behounek Bagnal, affectionately known as Mary Kay, passed peacefully on Friday, November 14th 2025, joining her heavenly father. Born September 13th 1950, and raised in Berkley, California until she graduated high school in 1968. She then chose to attend the University of Evansville in Indiana, where she studied nursing and was a proud Chi Omega sorority sister. After graduating, she joined The Navy where she was stationed in Charleston, SC. She was medically discharged from the Navy in 1973.
While stationed in Charleston, SC, this is where she met her Ex Husband, the late Larry O. Bagnal and they were married December 23, 1973. They then moved to Marion, SC where they raised their family of three boys Jason L. Bagnal, Matthew T. Bagnal (Matt), and Andrew K. Bagnal (Drew). She proudly worked as an infection control nurse for Saint Eugene Medical Center in Dillon, SC until 2005. She then moved to Chicago, Illinois to continue her career in nursing, get a fresh start, and to be closer to her sister. In 2010, she chose to return to Columbia, SC to be closer to her sons, and devote her time and energy to her grandchildren Ashlynne and Addison Bagnal. She retired from the nursing field in 2014.
She will be remembered by her children as the most devoted mother anyone could have. There was never a time while growing up that she did not show up for us, and support us. We will always be thankful for the time we had with her, and blessed to have been loved by her.
She was a lover of classical music, an avid reader, and had a passion for the arts. She was a devout Catholic, an excellent nurse, proud parent, and grandparent. She will be missed and loved by all those in her life that she touched.
She was predeceased by her father Frank J. Behounek, mother Margaret L. Behounek, and brother Paul Behounek. She is survived by her sons Jason L. Bagnal, Matthew T. Bagnal (Matt), Andrew K. Bagnal (Drew), grandchildren Ashlynne Bagnal, Addison Bagnal, Carter Bagnal, and her sister Anne Behounek Taylor.
The family will be holding a celebration of Life for Mary Kay on Sunday, November 23, 2025 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The celebration will be held at 325 Taylor St. APT# 4025 Columbia, SC 29201. There is plenty of parking on the fourth floor of the parking garage of the apartment complex.
