Eugene Carroll “Gene” Westphal, 87, of Fort Atkinson, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Gene was born on June 5, 1938, in Fort Atkinson, WI to the late Paul and Genevieve (Carnes) Westphal. His childhood was spent with his family on a dairy farm. He graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1956.
After high school, Gene enlisted in the Navy and trained as a corpsman. He served his country in both active duty and reserves. He received his training as a medical technologist at the Bethesda Medical Center in Maryland.
Upon discharge from the military, he returned home to work at Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital as a medical technologist. In his retirement, Gene enjoyed working for the Parks & Recreation Department mowing city parks and baseball diamonds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Genevieve Westphal; his sister-in-law, Marian Pearsall; and brothers-in-law, Lloyd Pearsall, Everette Pearsall, Walter Klitzke, and Cyrus Mittelsteadt.
Gene is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ardell Westphal; his children, Adam (Kirstie) Westphal, Jeffrey (Gail) Westphal, Debbie Bennett, and David (Debbie) Westphal; his nine grandchildren; and his three great-grandchildren; his sister, Barbara (David) Schroeder, and his brother, Arthur (Terri) Westphal.
He was an avid Brewers, Packers, and Badgers fan but above all, he was proud of his faith, his career, and his military service. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 301 S. High Street, Fort Atkinson, WI. Pastor Allen Kirschbaum will be officiating. His final resting place will be Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Atkinson.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Rainbow Hospice staff for their support and wonderful care over the last three months.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gene’s honor can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or to Rainbow Hospice.

We Entrusted Eugene Westphal's Care To
Nitardy Funeral Homes - Fort Atkinson
We have proudly served the Southern Wisconsin community for over 90 years, when Hilmar A. Nitardy opened his first funeral home in the area. In 1984, his son Russ knew it was time to offer professional, compassionate services to the Fort Atkinson community, and we constructed a new funeral home to address its needs. We feel so fortunate to be a part of the community, and have grown our family alongside the community for three generations....
