Michael John Szafranski, 71, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, in Gilbert, AZ. Born on September 18, 1954, in Adams, Massachusetts, he was the beloved son of Theodore and Florence Szafranski. Michael grew up in Adams and attended local elementary schools and graduated from Hoosac Valley High School in 1972. He continued his education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he proudly played football and earned his bachelor’s degree. He later furthered his education at Arizona State University, earning a master’s degree.
In 1978, Michael moved to Arizona, where he built a life rooted in family, service, and community. He married Bonnie (Calnan) of North Adams, Massachusetts, in 1983, and they raised their 3 sons in Gilbert, AZ.
Michael dedicated more than 35 years to teaching and coaching, where he impacted countless students and colleagues. He had the ability to connect with people and left a lasting impression and legacy with many former students and coworkers who continued to stay in touch with him throughout his life.
Michael lived with energy and enthusiasm. A lifelong athlete, he enjoyed basketball, football, baseball, golf, and all outdoor activities. Michael was known for his love of gardening and especially his sunflowers. He cherished time spent at the beach and treasured every vacation and family gathering. His greatest joy came from watching his grandchildren grow, play sports, and embrace life.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Szafranski; his sons Martin and Matthew (Kari); and his five grandchildren—Abagail, Madelyn, Liam, Ellie, and Theodore. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marlene Salvi; and his youngest son, Mark Szafranski.
Michael had a presence that lit up every room he entered—warm, strong, and unforgettable. He touched the lives of many, and his memory will continue to bring smiles to those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on December 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Redemption Church in Gilbert, Arizona. All are welcome to join in the celebration of his life.
