Ingrid Elisabeth Low (née Lange), born February 27, 1936, in Swinemünde, Germany, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Ingrid’s life was a remarkable journey shaped by resilience, courage, and an enduring spirit of adventure. At the end of World War II, she fled her hometown with her mother and two brothers, seeking safety and a new beginning. They resettled in Reinfeld, Schleswig-Holstein, where Ingrid spent her childhood and early youth.
As a young woman, she lived in Hamburg, Germany and later in London, England to immerse herself in the English language—an early sign of her curiosity and global outlook. But her dreams stretched even further. At the age of 27, with characteristic determination and independence, she booked a one-way passage to New York, boarding a ship alone to cross the Atlantic and begin the life she envisioned.
In New York City, Ingrid flourished. She embraced the city’s energy and opportunity, beginning a successful career as a sales manager specializing in imported heavy industrial equipment for the textile industry. Even more importantly, New York City is where she met the love of her life, Gerry Low. They married in 1966 and built a long and lasting partnership.
In 1979, Ingrid and Gerry moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, which became her beloved and permanent home. Here, Ingrid became a highly successful and deeply respected real estate agent, admired for her professionalism, integrity, and warm engagement with clients and colleagues alike. She made lasting contributions to the community and gave her time generously to organizations she cared about, including the Audubon Society, the Hilton Head Art League, the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the International Women’s Club, and the South Carolina Yacht Club.
Later in life, Ingrid found special joy and spiritual grounding at Christ Lutheran Church of Hilton Head, where she became an active and devoted member. She cherished Sunday services and participated wholeheartedly in the life of the church, forming close friendships and nurturing her faith.
Ingrid was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Gerry Low, her mother Gulli Maria Last, her father Walter Wilhelm Lange, and her brothers Volkmar Otto Lange in Hamburg, Germany and Peter Friethjof Lange in Sweden.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church on December 12, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
