This week, we bid farewell to Frank Mario Quill, 90, of Esperance, New York. Frank was born on February 2, 1935, to Irene Mary Conti and Frank Joseph Quill.
Frank was raised as an only child, as his elder sister had died in infancy. Irene, a member of the seamstress’s union, raised Frank as a military mother while his father served in World War II. Much of Frank’s youth was spent helping with dishes and bussing tables at the Conti family’s Italian Restaurant in the booming railroad town of Fonda, New York.
After Frank graduated from Fonda-Fultonville Central School, he attended the Frank Parker School of Music in Utica, New York, where he received voice lessons with great promise in a singing career.
In the early 1950s, Frank performed professionally under the stage name Franky James. Frank began his career as a musician in a traveling variety show. At the height of his popularity, he performed in nightclubs across New York City, always claiming that The Club Royale was his favorite. Frank even claimed fame with guest appearances on The Arthur Godfrey Show.
In 1957, Frank was drafted into the Armed Forces in response to the Korean Conflict, attaining a Rank of Specialist 4. Frank first served in Korea then transferred to France where he was stationed in Verdun. While in Paris, Frank began singing again; studying under Madame Dubonnet, and becoming director of the official US Army variety show, touring and performing for different Army camps. By 1959, Frank had been discharged and continued to serve in the Army Reserves until 1963.
After returning home, Frank was a glass cutter working at Kasson and Keller, where he met his beloved Sandra Bowdish. Frank and Sandra married on May 7, 1961, at the Church of St. Joseph in Amsterdam, New York. Around this time, Frank cut his first record, “Carolina in the Morning”.
Frank and Sandra proceeded to have three sons: Patrick in 1962, Paul in 1963, and Joseph in 1970.
In 1973, Frank made a career move to General Electric, where he was a supervisor in the Large Motor Division of Schenectady. After climbing up the corporate ladder, he eventually retired as a purchasing agent for Research and Development in Niskayuna.
Ever the public servant, Frank continued to volunteer his active participation in local government well into his elder years, from the 1980s to the 2010s. He was named President of We The People- Concerned Citizens of Montgomery County; a public collective that lobbied for justice and rights for the average citizen in the initiative of public referendum. Frank was the Director of the Youth Commission in the Town of Charleston for nearly 30 years, organizing countless holiday parties, picnic traditions, and field trips to local attractions.
In their retired years, Frank and Sandra traveled far and wide; some of their reliably favorite destinations included Niagara Falls, Maine, South Carolina and Maryland. After Sandra’s passing in 2012, much of Frank’s travels consisted in touring and frequenting his favorite diners across Montgomery and Schoharie Counties.
Some of Frank’s other personal hobbies included but were not limited to hunting, fishing, camping, and enjoying all of the classic action and western movies.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sandra Quill. Frank is survived by his three sons, Patrick (Patricia) Quill, Paul (Elizabeth) Quill, and Joseph (Robbien) Quill. Frank's legacy leaves behind eleven grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday December 5, 2025 at 12 noon at the Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home 15 Main Street, Fultonville, NY with Frank’s son Patrick Quill as Officiant.
