Surrounded by his family, Steve — a beloved husband, father, and grandfather — passed away peacefully the morning of November 20, 2025.
Born in Harrisburg, PA, Steve was raised in Concord, CA. He graduated from Ygnacio Valley High School in 1966 and earned a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of California, Davis in 1970. He soon moved to San Francisco, where he taught for Dolores Parish and served as Athletic Director. In his free time, he volunteered with the Archdiocese of San Francisco Communication Center in the radio department, providing background music for youth programs.
It was during his time at the Communication Center that he met his future wife, Sylvia. Among the many things they enjoyed were their love of music, especially the Grateful Dead, and the San Francisco Giants. They married in 1975 and moved to Brentwood, CA, where they started their family and opened The Old Hardware Store — a beloved fixture in the historic downtown.
Steve spent nearly 30 years as an active and dedicated member of the community. He served as a County Commissioner, youth sports coach, local sports booster, and volunteer firefighter. He was an Eagle Scout and troop leader in the local Boy Scouts.
In 2005, Steve made the decision to close The Old Hardware Store and he and Sylvia retired to Peyton, CO. They embraced everything Colorado had to offer, spending much time together fishing and visiting family and friends. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past February.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his three children, Geoffrey, Benjamin, and Sarah; his five grandchildren, Samuel, Natalie, Ethan, Reid, and Graham; his brothers, Barry Hopcroft, and James Burgess; and his sisters, Teresa Burgess, Debra Burgess, and Susan Gallardo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Frances Burgess, and his brother, Brian Burgess.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Steve’s honor to the San Francisco Giants Community Fund, Scouting America, or Pikes Peak Trout Unlimited.
