Richard J. Penrose, (85), passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, at his residence in Salinas, California. Richard was born in Richmond, UT on May 31, 1940, to the late Clyde and Hazel (Christensen) Penrose. He grew up in Utah with his younger brother, Lawrence, and the family later moved to Winnemucca, Nevada. He graduated from Humboldt County High School and furthered his education at University of Utah where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy and was an active member of the PHI DELTA CHI Fraternity. After graduation, he joined the Army Reserves which brought him out to California where he settled with his wife and started a family. Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lynne (Durbin) Penrose, daughters Sheri (Douglas) Grice, Angela (Gerald) Nielsen, grandchildren Hannah (Madison) Tompkins, Carl Nielsen, great grandsons Simon and Luke Tompkins and his brother Lawrence (Katharine) Penrose. Richard supported his family through his work as a pharmacist for 46 years, briefly working in Utah before moving to California. He owned three (3) pharmacies in Seaside, California and later went to work as a pharmacist for Safeway in Del Rey Oaks, California. He was a real estate agent for a time and had a pilot’s license, which he used with enjoyment flying his family and friends around California and Nevada. He was very active in the community serving as President of various civic organizations, including Seaside/Sand City Chamber of Commerce, Monterey Peninsula Boys & Girls Club and Kiwanis just to name a few. He was also a member of The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the Tri County Pharmaceutical Association. He loved traveling with his wife on cruises to Alaska, the Panama Canal and Tahiti. As a passionate sports fan he enjoyed rooting for the Oakland A’s, Golden State Warriors, and San Francisco 49ers, and then later in life, the San Francisco Giants and Purdue Boilermakers. Richard will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory can be made to Nature Conservancy. Healey Mortuary

Healey Mortuary

At Healey, we treat our Salinas Valley community members like family. Our story begins after World War II when Veteran Herbert C. Healey hoped to find a way to continue to meaningfully help his county and community grow. He and his wife founded Salinas Valley Mortuary in 1956 to help serve the families in the Salinas Valley area. Their lifelong mission was to unselfishly serve area families based on their strong, trusting relationship with their community – something we honor to this day almost seven decades years later....
