Dr. Pierre Arsène Ferrus, 73, passed away suddenly at home on November 30th, 2025. He was born on July 28th, 1952, in Grand Goâve, Haiti, where he completed his primary education. He later attended secondary school at Lycée Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where he earned his Baccalaureates I and II. After a rigorous entrance examination, he was admitted to the only medical school in Haiti at that time, La Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie d’Haïti.
Dr. Ferrus worked tirelessly with rural and underserved Haitian communities to improve health determinants and outcomes. He often traveled to remote villages with minimal sanitary infrastructure and poor road conditions. He found great purpose in the branch of medicine that addresses the health of entire communities. With that passion, he completed a master’s degree in public health at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He put that degree to good use, working with several healthcare organizations, including AOPS (Association des Œuvres Privées de Santé), one of the pioneering NGOs addressing community health in Haiti, ensuring access to basic healthcare in remote and underserved areas, and Save the Children, among others.
Dr. Ferrus is predeceased by his mother, Lodita Dutreuil, and father, Antoine Louis Ferrus; his sister, Marie Kettly Ferrus; and his brothers, Wesly and Wilfrid Ferrus. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Claudette Ferrus; his five children: Lighmy Ferrus (husband: Dr. André Junior Valembrun), Claude Arsène Ferrus (wife: Sabine Salomon), Vladimir Ferrus, Stephane Ferrus (wife: Laria Faria), and Mégane Ferrus; and his cherished grandchildren: Corally, Laetitia, and Yuri Valembrun; Eliott, Clarisse, Marcus, Cédric, and Stella Ferrus. He is also survived by his brother, Michel Eddy Ferrus; his sisters, Yanick, Claudine, and Gladys Ferrus; his nieces, Sherley, Natacha, Jessica, Wesline, and Sarafina Ferrus; and his many cousins, including Jean Mary, Douglas, Michelle, Yves, Jimmy,Rosedarline, Alphonse, Carole, Megan, and Nancy Dutreuil. He leaves behind close friends Harry Clinton and Sauveur Gelin.
Arsène loved life. He always welcomed others with a big smile. He enjoyed traveling, family dinners, and celebrations. Above all, he was a devoted family man. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he loved updating family members on their accomplishments and whereabouts. He had a remarkable gift for understanding others—one could talk to him about anything, and he would listen with patience and an open mind.
