Jon Wayne Alquist, 84, died peacefully at his home in Tucson on November 19, 2025. He is survived by sisters Sue A. Koepp of Las Vegas NV/Ruidoso NM, Deborah M. Garrett (Robert) of Tucson, and Lynda J. Hanna (Mark) of Tucson. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne B. Alquist and Mabel E. Alquist, and brother-in-law Gary Koepp.
Jon was born in Forest City, Iowa but moved to Tucson with his family in 1944. He graduated from Catalina High School in 1958 and the University of Arizona in 1963 with a journalism degree. He was an Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity member. He later received his journalism master's degree at Ohio State University.
He served in the Air Force as an Information Officer for 13 years. His assignments included bases in France, Thailand, Spain, Ohio and Texas. In the Air Force, he reported on the World Olympics in several locations including Mexico City.
He then returned to Tucson and worked in the UofA sports information office before becoming the Sports Editor of the UofA Alumni Office until his retirement in 2002. Jon was an unofficial sports historian for UofA sports and often received requests for information on this topic. He was one of two people who located the missing UofA/ASU Territorial Cup football trophy. He rarely missed any UofA sporting events.
He was incredibly knowledgeable about all sports, as well as many other topics (i.e. music, geography), which made him an unbeatable trivia player. He traveled extensively which often included sporting events such as track and field meets, his favorite. He was a fiercely independent, yet caring person, who lived life on his own terms.
A memorial service will be held at a later date; details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Catalina High School Foundation Donate - Catalina High School Foundation or Youth on Their Own Financial Gifts - Youth On Their Own.
