Glen Baxley passed away on December 5th at the age of 61. He spent several years working in vehicle maintenance at Patrick Air Force Base. He also worked with his family running Baxley Citrus Groves and he and his wife, Laura were co-owners of Paradise Ford.
One of Glen’s greatest commitments was caring for the elders in his life. He devoted himself to his parents, his in-laws and his uncle stepping in to help in ways that made a lasting difference.
Glen had a lifelong connection to the Collier Mountain property in Big Stone Gap, VA, land that has been in his family since 1830. He took responsibility for maintaining it, carrying forward the care and attention his father once gave to their groves.
A car guy at heart, Glen’s pride and joy was his restored 1967 Ford Fairlane. He poured countless hours into bringing it back to life. He also loved NASCAR—especially trips to Daytona Speedway with friends and staying in the infield for the Daytona 500.
Glen loved tractors, being outdoors, boating and diving and he and Laura shared their lives with dogs throughout their marriage. Friends liked to say that any dog they rescued had “hit the lottery."
He adored his grandson, Hagen and they bonded over their shared love of tractors and cars. Grandpa Glen was always teaching him things which is how he’ll be remembered by him.
Glen is survived by his wife, Laura Baxley; his stepdaughter, Megan McCrea (Richard) and grandson, Hagen; his mother, Lula Belle Wheelock; his sister, Connie Howard (Mike); his brothers, Dale Baxley and John Baxley (Joy); his sister in laws, Pam Lamb (Rob) and Cindy Parrish (Michael); and his nieces, great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph (Keith) Baxley; his Uncle, Wayne Baxley; and his in-laws, Margaret and Frank Vander Hagen.
Glen will be remembered for the things he built, fixed, restored, and cared for—whether that was a piece of land, a classic car, or a loyal dog curled up nearby.
A private celebration of life will be held to honor Glen.
