Margarita Gómez Phillips (née Lamas) was born on July 20, 1942 in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico. She died November 27, 2025 in Lutz, FL. She was preceded in death by her mother, Guadalupe (1968), her father, José (1987), and her sister, Jacinta (2014).
Margarita lived a life of learning, adventure, and generosity. She immigrated to the United States in 1965 with her husband and son, where she learned English, completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of South Florida, made progress toward a graduate degree in medical anthropology, and became a medical lab technician. She worked as a clinical microbiologist for SmithKline Beecham, later Quest Diagnostics, for over 30 years.
She was a scientist by trade, but she also loved history, art, and culture. During her life, she traveled the world: to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Belize, Costa Rica, and all around Europe. She returned to Mexico almost every year to visit her family. She was a frequent patron of the arts in Tampa, including the Florida Orchestra, Nutcracker performances, and various art museums.
Her Catholic faith instilled in her a commitment to serving others. Her friends and family used to say that she would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it – and she often did. Throughout the years, Margarita volunteered for Lifepath Hospice, Catholic Mobile Medical Services, Santa Maria Mission Tampa, Life’s Choices Women’s Clinic, and St. Timothy Catholic Church, and she spent uncountable hours helping her community with translation, housing, food, and whatever else they needed. She was a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church for over 20 years, where she participated in the women’s club, Bible study, and weekly bingo nights.
By the grace of God, Margarita survived multiple bouts with cancer beginning in her 30’s, and she lived to see many generations of her family in the US and Mexico grow up and have children of their own. Her family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her son, José (Deborah) Phillips; her brothers, Roberto Gómez and Antonio (Susana) Gómez; her grandchildren, Amanda (Shyama Kuver) Phillips, Joseph Phillips, and Amy Phillips; relatives in Guadalajara and Zacatecas, Mexico; and numerous friends and family across Florida and the United States.
May she rest in peace.
A service will be held at Loyless Funeral Home in Land O’ Lakes, FL, on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 10:30 am, with a burial to follow at Lutz Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society.
