Walter G. “Walt” Altman, Jr., passed away peacefully at age 71 on December 20, 2025,surrounded by his family in North Charleston, South Carolina. Born on July 22, 1954, in Sumter, South Carolina, he was a loving father known for his generous and giving spirit.

Walt earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina in 1983. He worked as a professional engineer and consultant on projects throughout the southeastern United States before serving as the Academic Program Manager for the Civil Engineering Technology program at Trident Technical College for 15 years. In retirement, he worked as a sales associate at Home Depot in Summerville.

He loved to read science fiction and to watch any movie he could find. He was a lifelong fan of Billy Joel and Elton John. Learning was important to him; most recently, he was discovering all he could about Einstein’s theory of general relativity. He had strong beliefs and wasn’t afraid to argue about them.

Walt is survived by his sons, Walter G. “Wally” Altman, III (Pam) and Sarvis H. “Chip” Altman; grandson, J. Isaac Altman; and siblings Marie DeLane Altman Binkney (Harvey) and Roger D. Altman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter G. Altman, Sr. and Lula Marie Hughes Altman.
