Leonard "Sandy" Gene Sanders, 94, of Ione, California, passed away December 28, 2025, in Ione, California. He was born on February 17, 1931, in Modesto, California, to the late Herchel and Madeline (Roe) Sanders.Sandy had an obsession with flying. He qualified for his first solo flight at 14 and made his final flight at 94! Sandy was known as the Voice of Reno for his announcement at the Reno Air Races for more than 35 years. Sandy's knowledge about the fastest P-51s, Hawker Sea Furys, P-38s & others was spectacular. He will be greatly missed by family, aeronautic enthusiasts, and friends.Sandy is survived by his son, Steven Sanders of Colfax, CA; daughter, Melissa Sheehan of San Leandro, CA; stepsons Dennis Sanders of Ione, CA, and Brian Sanders of Tehachapi, CA; grandson Brenton Sanders; granddaughter Katie Kendall; step grandchildren: Shannon Swager, Elise Sanders, Chad, and Tyler Sanders.A "Celebration of Life" for both Sandy and Ruth (beloved wife) will be announced in the future.
