Patricia Anne Torrence Kostorizos, formerly of Lexington, Massachusetts, a beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 10th, 2026 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1900 Main Street, Columbia, South Carolina. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Leesburg Road. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Dr. Anne T. Kostorizos, born Patricia Anne Torrence, arrived in this world on June 26th, 1942 as the first and only surviving child of her parents Marion Treadwell and Annie Laurie Roland Torrence. Raised in Eastover, South Carolina, Anne spent much of her young life learning to play the piano and then playing the organ for the Good Hope Baptist Church. After high school, Anne was the first person in her generations of family to attend college and she enrolled in the all womens institution, Columbia College, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in Drama and Psychology. After graduation, Anne went on to earn a master's degree in education from Appalachian State University and a PhD in education from Boston University. After earning her PhD, Anne went on to a life-long career as a college professor in the business department first at Fisher College in Boston, Massachusetts and then at Middlesex Community College, in Burlington, Massachusetts from 1971-2002.
Although Anne was raised as a Southern Baptist, she converted to Greek Orthodoxy prior to her marriage and embraced her faith anew. Anne served many years with the Women’s Philoptochos group at her church and served a year on the National Committee, attending Clergy/Laity conferences around the country. Along with her husband, Anne was an original member of Leadership 100 and donated passionately to the founding of the St. Nicholas Shrine at Ground Zero in New York City as well as the St. Photios National Shrine in St. Augustine, Florida. Anne was particularly overjoyed when she and her husband were granted the experience of traveling to Instanbul with Archbishop Iakovos to visit the Phanar, meet the Patriarch, and venerate the Hagia Sophia.
Anne is survived by her cherished daughter, Maria-Elena Kostorizos, and her husband, Steven Douvas, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. She also leaves behind her four most precious grandchildren, Marissa Douvas, of Greer, South Carolina; James Douvas, of Simpsonville, South Carolina; Anthea Douvas, of Brooklyn, New York; and Peter E. Kostorizos, also of Brooklyn, New York.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Peter E. Kostorizos and her beloved son, Evan P. Kostorizos.
As we say goodbye to Anne, we celebrate the life of a woman who was a beacon of kindness and love. Her legacy is one of unwavering devotion to her family, a complete commitment to her Orthodox faith, and a tireless dedication to the countless students she touched in her 34 years of teaching. Anne's memory will be treasured forever, as we hold her close in our hearts and remember the light she brought into this world.
