Alice Marie Morehouse, 101, of West St. Paul, died at the home of her daughter on January 4, 2026. Born in St. Paul on June 27, 1924, the daughter of William Christian and Anna Leona (Schaap) Birkebak, she was originally named Ella Birkebak, but from early childhood was known as Alice Schaap. She graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1943 from North St. Paul High School, after which she worked as a secretary for the school’s principal until taking a wartime position with the Office of Price Administration. Following the end of World War 2, she transitioned to secretarial work at 3M, where she met a young engineer, Val Morehouse, whom she married in 1947. Val attended law school part-time while working as an engineer, after which he and Alice worked together to build a successful law practice and consulting engineer business. For decades she happily taught kindergarten and played the piano at House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. She continued to live in the West St. Paul home that she and Val designed and built in 1959 until six months before her death. In addition to her brother, Rev. Louis Schaap (Abernathy, Texas), she is survived by her children, Valerie Werness (Mark) of West St. Paul and David Morehouse (Christie Paulsen) of Hopkins; grandchildren Eric Werness (Elizabeth), San Jose, Cal.; Brent Werness (Jessica Chong), Seattle, Wash.; Ellen Morehouse (Jordan Narvey), Minneapolis; Lindsay Morehouse (Nicholas Pearce), Linköping, Sweden; and Hugh Morehouse, Hopkins; and seven great-grandsons. Preceded in death by her husband, Val Morehouse. Visitation, 1 pm, and service, 2 pm, Wednesday, January 14, at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Ave, St Paul, MN 55105.
