Eleanor Cecelia Klepacki (Ellie) passed away at home on January 7, completing a long and fruitful life. She has joined her beloved husband, Ed, in eternal rest.Ellie was born in Taftville, CT on February 10, 1929, to the late Josephat and Rosilda (Chenaille) Mathieu. She was raised in the Willimansett section of Chicopee and attended parochial and public schools there. On her 18th birthday, she met the love of her life, Edward Klepacki at a square dance in Hatfield, Mass. It was ‘love at first dance’ and very special, meeting on her birthday and enjoying their first date on Valentine’s Day. They both enjoyed 'cutting the rug' throughout the decades of their marriage, which took place in Chicopee on May 30th, 1949. They began their lives together there, with Ed working construction and Ellie at Sears and Roebuck, living above her folks in order to save for their dream home, which they built themselves in 1958. The home was on pastureland in South Hadley, given as a wedding gift from Ed's parents. They lived their lives there happily, with nature's beauty all around.Ellie loved nature and outdoor activities. She enjoyed skiing, both downhill and cross country, and golf, and was a longtime member of The Orchards Golf Club. A lover of water, Ellie played in brooks as a child and spent many summers on their boat on the Connecticut River and on Lake Sunapee. She often enjoyed finishing her days beside a good campfire.Ellie was a lifelong devotee of travel, and National Geographic Magazine. She put armchair exploration into action, first tenting, then trailering her family throughout the United States and Canada. She then conscripted family and friends on adventures around the world including Western Europe, the Baltic countries, Egypt and the Nile, Brazil and the Amazon, China and the Yangtze, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.A woman of faith, Ellie was a long-time member of Saint Theresa’s of Lisieux Parish in South Hadley. She was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Women’s group and served in a variety of capacities and on multiple committees at the parish over the years. She enjoyed being a member of the “Morning Mass” group in her later years.Always civic-minded, Ellie was an active citizen and contributor to South Hadley. She was a member and past Chair of The Planning Board, a Town Meeting Member for over 50 years, a member of the town’s Bicentennial Committee, the Historical Society, and a member and past president of the Know Your Town (KYT) committee. Ellie worked tirelessly on the concept and establishment of the “South Hadley Canal Park”, the site of the first navigational canal in the United States. She was a “Friend” of the Gaylord Memorial Library and a financial supporter of the “new” South Hadley Public library. She contributed time and effort in the restoration of “Sycamores”, the home of Colonel Benjamin Ruggles Woodbridge. And she was also a docent at Mount Holyoke College’s art museum and a Girl Scout leader for several years.Ellie was predeceased by her husband, Edward (in 1997), her parents and siblings Laurent Mathieu, Ernest Mathieu, Bernadette Lauzier and Lillian Alvaro.Ever proud of her family, she is survived by her six children: Edward (Skip) Klepacki, Jr. (Pat Szumowski) of Northampton, MA; Dr. Mark Klepacki (Brenda) of Burlington, CT; David (Amarin Dawn) of Bragg Creek, Alberta, Canada; Karolyn Ryan (Jim) of Longmeadow, MA; Dwight (Debbie) of Spofford, NH; and Andrew (Jean) of Hadley, MA. She also leaves sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.Her family would like to thank Compassus Hospice Care and Griswold Home Care for the exceptional services provided Ellie over the past years, especially by her aide, Ms. Vida Kwaako. Their care and professional concern allowed the family to fulfill Ellie’s wishes to stay in her own home. Also, a special acknowledgement is extended to her niece and godchild, Eleanor Shea, for her faithful devotion to her aunt.Visitation will be held Monday, January 12 from 5pm-7pm at Beers & Story Funeral South Hadley Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s of Lisieux in South Hadley on Tuesday, January 13 at 11 am with a visitation at the funeral home prior to the mass from 9:30am-10:30 am.  Burial be at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in South Hadley.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Hadley Public Library, 2 Canal Street, South Hadley; The Gaylord Memorial Library, 47 College Street, South Hadley; South Hadley Historical Society, PO Box 387, 4 North Main Street, South Hadley 01075; St Theresa’s of Lisieux Parish at 9 East Parkview Drive, South Hadley, MA 01075
